Evox Rifa naked and encapsulated
SMD capacitors - How does one choose?
  • Naked SMD film capacitors are smaller and generally less expensive. Naked stacked capacitors are the most size efficient, naked wound caps are larger but do not delaminate.
  • In some cases (especially in lower voltages) naked SMD capacitors can be offered in larger capacitance values for a given size / voltage.
  • Encapsulated SMD capacitors withstand higher soldering temperatures and do not delaminate.
  • Encapsulated SMD capacitors offer better flammability characteristics, especially in PEN dielectric.
  • The electrical properties of encapsulated SMD capacitors (especially in PEN dielectric) are less affected by humidity.
  • Encapsulated SMD capacitors withstand a wider range of chemicals and substances found in certain applications, for instance gasoline.

Evox Rifa offers a construction to meet every need:

  • Naked stacked film in sizes down to 0603.
  • Naked wound film in sizes down to 2220.
  • Encapsulated film in sizes down to 2220.
  • MLCC in sizes down to 0201.

See the handy SMD capacitor selector chart.
